Arrived at 0830, went into the building around 0845. Taken into the exam room just after 0900. Sat down, was told by everyone they would ask questions to put you at rest. They ask questions but don’t put you at rest! Went through my discharge book, asked what type of ships I’d sailed on. Didn’t ask for or even talk about the folio. After all that effort…….
Sextant
What is it? What is the reading? Second reading What are the errors? (Both adjustable and non adjustable) What is meant by ‘on’ and ‘off’ the arc?
Hydrometer
Pick it up. What does it do? Why would you use it? What is Dock water Allowance? How would you find the Error?
Hygrometer
Open the Stevenson Screen. What does it contain? What does the reading tell you? What would you expect if both thermometers had the same reading? How often if the wick changed?
PAB
What is it? What’s is the reading? Errors and how would you apply them?
Magnetic Compass
Explain the compass. Had to explain everything from the hood to the slewing bolts! What are they all for? How would you find the error? How would you know where the magnets have to go? (back of deviation card) Where would you find variation? Explained arrow up and arrow down on the azimuth ring, how to find the error and what to do if you have an error. Did you carry a spare?
Asked me to sit down.
What is MARPOL annex one? Can you discharge oil in a special area? What arrangements need to be in place. What equipment/paper work must the ship have.
Who was the security officer on your last ship? What is his job? Where would you find information on his job? What security equipment do you carry? What were the security arrangements on your last ship?

What fire fighting equipment did you have on your last ship? You have fire alarm on the bridge, actions? How would you start the emergency fire pump locally?
How would you hand over the watch? What would you tell your look out? You arrive on the bridge and the OOW is in the middle of a turn, would you take the watch? Did your last ship have UMS? What were the arrangements for this on the bridge? The duty engineer is in the engine room and you haven’t heard from him in one hour, actions?
The master asks you to prepare the vessel for a load line survey, what would you do?
What are the duties of OOW in port? You see an oil leak on deck, what do you do?
What is SOPEP? Who has to carry it? What is in it?
Duties of OOW at sea When do you call the master? Where would OOW find Guidance on their duties?

Asked what equipment I had on the bridge. Asked some questions on ECDIS, GPS and Radar, limitations etc. Your radar fails when you are on watch, what do you do?
Asked me to step outside for a minute. Had no idea if I’d passed or not. Brought me back in went over some more security things. Told me what I got wrong or had to brush up on. She then said she was happy to tell me that I’d passed. Go in early, don’t get too worked up the night before. Have a beer and get a good sleep, even though it will be near impossible to get a good sleep! Study in a group, makes a big difference. Many thanks to everyone at the college, good luck!
