After the formal introduction and going through the documents and testimonials he put me on an oil tanker 45000 tons dwt and said you will remain master on this type of ship until otherwise specified.

• You have completed loading in port and after all documentation you have a pilot on board and are about to depart when the visibility drops to zero. Actions?

• How does Marpol Annex I affect you?

• You receive a call at 2 am from the 2nd mate informing you of a gyro failure. Actions?

• You’re sailing in the North Atlantic Ocean during the winter season, what do you expect to encounter and what precautions will you take?

• In what circumstances are you required to exchange a DOS (ISPS)?

• Give an example of a situation when safety will override security?

• Cook is injured on board? Actions?

• Preparations for medical evacuation by Helicopter?

• What are the different ways of informing the MAIB regarding an accident/incident? Where will you get information regarding same?

• Crew agreement - What is ALC1(d) and ALC 6?

• What are the masters responsibilities regarding ISM?

• A crew member commit’s a lesser breach of misconduct even after receiving 2 previous reprimands from the chief officer? The chief officer brings this to your notice. Actions?

• A crew member complaints of an assault on him by another crew member. Actions?

• How will you carry out a tentative swing?

• What is heeling error? Which Coefficient?

Then came the moment of truth, Capt Kaiser said that you have achieved the standards of the MCA and that it’s a pass.
