Jamie Cumming v Captain Ali

Result: Pass

Ship type: Shuttle tankers, Chemical as cadet.

Memory is shocking so will try to put in some kind of order but I am sure that I will miss out allot and put things in the wrong place!

Waiting outside I was given a bit of paper and told to write down how FPDʼs prevented accidental on load of life boats? Told to make a sketch also. This was before he asked what kind of ship I was on. He then left me to it for 10 mins.

He then took me in and said that I would be a C/O on a tanker unless he ran out of questions and that the first thing I told him for safety, ROR and buoys would be the only thing he would take.

How and when would you launch your free fall life boat?

What are the main risks when recovering?

What document do you have under ISM?

How long is a DOC and SMC valid for? Who does the surveys and when? How long are the certificates valid?

What documents do you have under ISPS? How long is a ISSC valid for?

What is a DOS and when would you exchange one? How long are security records kept onboard?

What is in ILO178 and ILO180 inspections and who does them?

Regarding ILO 178 what would they look at in the galley apart from fridge temps?

What do they look at in the crew agreement during ILO inspections?

Which part of the crew agreement needs to be posted?

What are the working hours for a crew member under 18?

What is CERS? Who reports and when?

What is a expanded inspection and who does it apply to?

What is a mandatory expanded inspection? I answered expanded as you would for mandatory as that is how it sounded when he asked!! I think he got the questions wrong in his head. I guess he was thinking about enhanced survey for the first question.

So to avoid any confusion about what he was asking I just explained the difference between expanded PSC inspections, mandatory expanded PSC inspections and Enhanced survey program.

What instraments do you have to help you load?

What instructions would you give to your OOW during cargo operations? (standing/night orders)

Does your loading computer need to be approved by anyone?

How does your PMS work onboard?

Who is in charge of the PMS?

What is in it about anchor, windlass and mooring equipment?

How fast should your windlass heave your anchor?

Anchor prep forward?

Would you walk back or drop the anchor?

How would you know your vessel was anchored?

What is a CSR? How is it corrected? What happens to the old parts? (sequential numbers)

ROR........

Who can use a separation zone?

Tug and tow crossing from port

tug and tow RAM crossing from port

Tug and tow RAM crossing from port you are CBD

Ferry overtaking then crossing ahead, are you give way?

Make a plot fwd of your beam that you can go to port for

make a plot fwd of your beam that is doing same course and speed

Lights

One white light....wanted all the options

what lights would a tug and tow RAM show during night tow over 200 vsl over 50

a few other lights that I cant remember, nothing crazy!

A couple of buoys, again very straight forward! Light top mark what is it used for

All in all a fairly straight forward exam! He had the NOE in his hand for ages while he went on about life and children and how they were really short of examiners and bla bla bla...

Many thanks to most of the guys at the college especially Vinil.

do your own research and form your own opinions on it then you will have a much better knowledge of the subject
