NAME:-kairav bhatt


 

Type of ships:- chemical and vlcc


 

Examiner:- Mr. Fletcher for 1st attempt and Mr. Vinod Ranganathan for 2nd attepmt.


My oral exam was on 19th march 2010. i had reached the centre half an hour before the exam. First attempt the examiner was Mr. fletcher and second time was Mr Ranganathan for the first time on his own and was my second time and was confident this time for sure.

 

Firstly he asked me did i know why i failed my orals for the first time and then he started to asked questions to make me comfortable.

 

Note:- The questions are both of first and second attempt. And the questions are not in exact order as asked.

 

INSTRUMENTS:-

 

SEXTANT:-

 

1) he showed me the sextant and asked what is it.

 

2) PICK UP THE SEXTANT.

 

3) give me the reading.

 

4) what are the errors in sextant both adjustable and non adjustable.

 

5) explain what is side error and how do you correct it.

 

PAB:-

 

1) what is it?

 

2) take the reading? ( it is best to check the pressure form the forecast and you will know the approx value)

 

3) what corrections you apply in it?

 

4) from the reading i got how will you know it is high pressure or low pressure.

 

HYDROMETER:-

 

1) what is this and what does it give?

 

2) why do u calculate DWA

 

3) what is the formula for DWA.

 

MAGNETIC COMPASS:-

 

1) what is this and what does it contain.

 

2) how do you know where the magnets have to go.

 

3) what is inside compass bowl. and ratio of liquid inside?

 

METEOROLOGY:-

 

1)then he took me to the window and asked me where is the wind from and how will you write the weather in the log book.

 

then he told me ti sit on the chair.

 

General:-

 

1) how will you handover the watch.

 

2) what actions will you take if you are oow going for anchor stations.

 

3) what precautions will you take if you are doing mooring station in aft

and what special precautions will you take ( i answered but was not very happy about the answer as i had forgotten to mention about propeller then i thought for bit and then answered he seemd to be happy this time)

 

4) he then said i am in cargo operation and fire alarm is off what will be your action?( for the first time my failing point was that i forgot to call the port fire brigade and ambulance if required)

 

5) if you see oil leak on deck actions?

 

6)what does SOPEP manual contains?

 

7) on birdge if captain come to you and asked if i had proper rest how will you know that you had proper rest? ( this question was directing me towards rest hours to be followed ILO 180)

 

8) what type of fire fighting appliances you had on board?

 

9) how will you test sprinklers in paint store?

 

10) explain how will you operate fixed CO2 ?

 

11) you have fire in engine room actions? and what precautions will you take before releasing CO2?

 

12) what type of lifeboats you had on board?

 

13) explain how will you launch lifeboat as you would to a cadet?

 

14) at what instances will you call master?

 

15) enclosed space procedures and what precautions will you take?

 

16) you are in the ballast tanks and what all things will you check for inspections of ballast tank?( first attempt i had forgotten to talk about anodes )

 

17)tell me something about ISM and SMS?

 

18)what is SOLAS training manual and what does it contain?

 

19) who was the safety officer on board and what were his duties?

 

20) how will you do passage planning and explain APEM ?

 

21) you have right hand propeller and ahead movement where will the bow tend to go?

 

Bouyage:-

identify the buoy its lights and day shape?( please note that in identifying the examiner will not show you the day shape)

 

1) north cardnal mark? and where will you pass from?

 

2) isolated danger mark.

 

then he kept the buoys he gave me region A for first attempt vessel inbound.

 

1) safe water mark ( as giving the light of safe warter mark he asked me what do you mean by ISOPHASE AND OCCULTING LIGHTS )

 

2)port hand lateral mark

 

3) east cardinal mark

 

4) preffered channel to port

 

5) isolated danger mark ( what actions will you take if you see this buoy right ahead

 

for the 2nd attempt he just gave me 4 bouys region B as i had done good in first attepmt.

 

ROR:- these questions are both of 1st and 2nd attempt.i am on PDV at all times.

 

1) PDV crossing from port

 

2) PDV crossing from stbd.

 

3) fishing v/l at your starboard quarter action.

 

4) nearly head on but passing about 0.3 miles from stbd ur actions.( please do not go to port as he will insist you to go on port as he wanted to make sure that you know the rules. THIS MIGHT BE FAILING QUESTION.)

 

TSS:-

 

1)PDV crossing for stbd

 

2)PDV crossing form port.

 

3) fishing vessel crossing.

 

4) you are overtaking fissing v/l fishing in lane who is to keep clear.

 

5) where can fishing v/l be inshore, in traffic lane , in seperation zone, in opposite lane changing the directions of the fishing in lane.( do read about TSS rule throughly )

 

6)you are CBD and fishing v/l crossing.

 

RESTRICTED VIS:-

 

1) explain WOA

 

2) plot your own ship on the plot.

 

3) action if ship is on 2 points stbd bow.

 

4) stbd quarter.

 

5) how will you plot a vessel overtaking you.

 

6) how will you plot you overtaking other v/l and where will you over take from.( if the examiner is Mr. ranganathan he prefers to overtake from port but as long as you give the answer and proove it he wont object.)

 

LIGHTS, SHAPES AND SOUND SIGNALS:-

 

1)v/l pushing ( i have made mistake in the first light itself and said it was tug and tow)

 

2) NUC

 

3) V/L aground

 

4) tug and tow length of tug less then 50 mtr and tow exceeding 200 mtr.

 

5) where is the length of tow measured from?

 

6) fishing v/l seen from port side.

 

7) pilot v/l from STBD side.

 

8) v/l's engaged in pair trawling.

 

9) v/l pushing again ( coz as the other lights were good and the intention of the surveyor was to pass me,he said i have one more chance as i have done the orals very good, i was completely blank at that point and then i spoke the rule mentioning tug and tow and pussing v/l and then i said it was the pushing v/l)

 

 

MOMENT OF TRUTH:-

HE THEN SAID THE PUSHING VESSEL SAVED ME FROM FAILING AND HE SIGNED THE NOE WITHOUT TAKING ANY TIME TO THINK. HE THEN DISCUSSED SOME QUESTIONS AND SAID THAT THERE ARE NO 100% ORALS BUT WE EXPECT MORE THEN 100% IN ROR. HE SAID THAT I HOPE YOU WONT FORGET PUSHING V/L AGAIN. WE HAD A LAUGH AND SHOOK HANDS. I THANKED HIM FOR GIVING ME THE 2ND CHANCE TO THINK. I WOULD LIKE TO THANK ALL THE LECTURERS WHO TAUGHT ME AND CLEARED THE DOUBTS WHEN I WAS IN NEED.

 

CAUTION:- DISCUSSION AND GROUP STUDY IS THE BEST WAY TO PASS. ALL THE BEST FOT FUTURE.
