Chris Smith vs Simon (from Leith Marine Office)

Vinod Ranganathan (observing)

Date: Oct 2010

C/O joining for 1st time – Actions and expectations?

Ø ISM – How does it affect C/O?

Ø How would you prepare for an ISM audit and what would the auditor be looking for?

Ø Heavy Lift ops – Procedure, Documentation, Checks, Requirements?

Ø Cargo Securing Manual – What, why, how, etc?

Ø Register of Lifting gear and Cargo handling equipment - What, why, how, etc?

Ø Lifeboat test procedures – MSN 1803

Ø Lifeboat drill – When, how, who, etc?

Ø Fire Drill – When, how, who, etc?

Ø MARPOL in N. Sea – C/O responsibilities?

Ø Actions to be taken when Boson reports that an AB has been fighting with a 3rd Party Contractor on board?

Ø Using a model of a ship, describe how to bring the v/l to anchor including all helm and engine movements. (Wind force 3 and 2kts of current 90degrees to wind).

Ø Rules – Open water;

1. me PDV with CBD crossing from Port,

2. me PDV with tug and tow crossing from Port,

3. me CBD with tug and tow RAM crossing from Port.

Ø Rules – Narrow Channel;

Overtaking another v/l – how, what response expected, actions if no response?

Channel widens – actions? No restrictions either side now – actions to overtake?

Ø Rules – Restricted Vis:

Radar plotting – he placed “O” to “A” and asked me to place “W”. Then identify situation and actions. I had crossing from Starboard, other v/l overtaking and a head on situation.

Ø Rules – Smarty board –

Trawler making way,

Pilot vessel from Stern,

V/L aground probably more than 50m. – identify and sound signals including the meanings of “U” and “L”

Ø Buoys – He gave me row of 4 buoys and asked me to navigate the ship through them (no description required). Heading of 270deg, outbound and had: Preferred Channel to Port, Special Mark (can), Safe Water Mark and East Cardinal.

Best regards

Chris Smith
