Arrived Fort matilda long before my Orals was scheduled just to get a feel of what type of questions the surveyor was keen on asking that day and honestly that helped. Was allowed to enter the building only at 1500 hrs. I was taken to the first floor and was shown my seat and asked to wait. After a while I saw Capt. K. Insan coming towards me and he took me to the examination room and was asked to take my seat. He checked my passport and CDC and told me that all the questions will be asked according to MGN 069 and that my first answer would be considered as my last answer. He also told me that though I had sailed only on Bulk carriers the questions could be asked from all types of ships, which made me more nervous as I had not expected that. IT HAD STARTED !!!
Instruments : 1. SEXTANT : He asked me the name and told me to hand it over to him. He asked me to set a reading(OFF THE ARC). Gave me a reading and told me to read it (ON THE ARC). Asked me what are the correctible errors and asked me to explain error of perpendicularity. He asked if I had ever taken a sight on the ship and asked me to explain how will I measure the suns altitude using the sextant.
2. HYDROMETER : Asked me to name the instrument. Asked me when it is used. Asked me the formula for DWA. He then asked me why do we calculate DWA.
3. PAB : Asked me to find out the pressure and what are the corrections which will be applied to the reading.
4. Magnetic Compass : Asked me to name the various parts which i can see. Pointed at the azimuth ring and told me to name it. He then told me if i had a bubble inside the compass bowl what would I do ? He told me to take a bearing of a distant light house and asked me if I could draw this reading directly to the chart. He asked how many minimum bearings are required to plot a position on the chart. Asked me about leading bearings and transit bearings. Asked me what are the maintenance I will carry out on it.
GENERALS : 1. He asked me about MGN 315. (EXPLAIN) 2. He asked whether I should have a lookout on the bridge all the time. I told him no and asked me what are the circumstances u should have one. 3. Asked me I was to pick-up a pilot and the crew had prepared the pilot ladder what checks I will do to ensure it is rigged properly. Then he asked me if I had any doubt what should I refer (remember to tell him the poster on the weelhouse.) 4. Told me that I was on a port where security level 1 was to be maintained. What will be my duties. 5. He asked me how often do we carry out life boat drills on a life boat. Asked me the launching procedure. Also asked what are the equipments inside the lifeboat. 6. Asked me what is the use of SART. Asked me what I would see on the X band radar at various ranges. 7. Asked me if Ihad accidentally activated an EPIRB what procedure will I follow. 8. Pointed at the HRU. Asked me to name it and tell him the expiry date. 9. What would be my duties in a port watch on a bulk carrier. 10. Asked me what maintenance I would carry out on FFA. 11. Asked me what is there in the Master's Night order book & masters Standing orders. 12. Asked me instances when I should call a Master. 13. Asked me what arrival preparation would i make when I m approaching a pilot station. 14. Asked me checks I would make on a BA set. What should be the pressure before starting a drill. Asked me what I would do after the drill. 15. Asked me purpose of PSC. 16. Asked me precautions I would take in case of fog.
ROR : 1. Restricted Visibility : Gave me O & A, asked me to place W. Asked me to replace the plots with another ship and told me to take action. (V/L was on stbd bow crossing).
2. Situations : Told me that I was on a PDV. a. PDV from port/stbd. b. CBD from port side. c. NUC from port side. d. RAM crossing from port side.
TSS. a. FV from stbd side b. Sv from port side c. SV overtaking you. d. Tug and Tow not RAM from port side
NARROW CHANNEL a. V/l coming from the reciprocal course
SMARTYBOARD Asked me around 8 to 10 laminated already prepared papers with lights on them. Told me to idientify the type, size, status, fog signal, day shape and action.
BOUYS: 1. Port hand lateral mark 2. Special Mark (yellow can) 3. Isolated danger mark 4. Preferred channel mark 5. Nort cardinal mark
He then told me to go out for some time. Then he called me inside and told me that I passed. He had a brief chat with me, told me my mistakes and asked me to find out the answers later on. I would really like to thank Capt.K Insan and Capt. V.Ranganathan as they made me feel really comfortable inside the exam hall. And finally a speacial thanks to Capt. Vinil Gupta for all the help and support he gave throughout without whom it woudnt have been possible to pass in the first attempt. | |
