Atanasio Calunga

Examiner Kaiser Ali

Duration 1hr

Date 21/09/2011

He started with emergency evacuation procedures from the building. Then he asked me what kind of ships I sailed on. I said oil tankers.

He told me that all the questions he was going to ask would be based on a fully loaded ship. The master is onboard in case I needed him.

How many people were there on your last ship? How many lifeboats did you have?

Sextant: Pick up the sextant. Take the reading. How do you correct the first error?

Magnetic Compass: What’s that thing on top of it? (Azimuth mirror). How do you find whether it has any fault? How do you take bearings of a celestial and a terrestrial body?

PAB: take the reading of the pressure. Will you log it down? I said no. I have to apply the corrections. Then he asked what corrections? Why do you add the second correction?

Life jackets requirements? On what criteria is based the life buoy requirement?

FFA on my last ship. What’s the use of the fire damper?

What’s your understanding of the ISM code? As a third officer how do you benefit from it? How do you know your tasks onboard the ship?

What does ‘’keeping a good navigational watch’’ mean to you? If you were the captain, what is the first and most important thing you would check as soon as your officer arrives on the bridge to take over the watch?

What checks would you make before picking up the pilot?

How do you perform a steering test? What manual tells you this?

ECDIS: tell me what you know. What are the limitations of an ENC?

AIS: limitations? Can you use it for collision avoidance?

ARPA: Limitations?

GPS: are there any errors? How do you know when there is an error?

What were the contents of your deviation card? What was at the back of it?

Who was your ship safety officer? His functions?

Who was your ship security officer? His functions?

What’s a DOS? When do you exchange a DOS?

The chief officer puts you in charge to start the cargo loading operation.

How would you start it? At this point I knew I would tell him loads of things related to oil tankers so I wanted to make sure first that he was asking regarding a cargo operation in an oil tanker. He answered: Do you think it’s a passenger ship??Do you want me to ask you about passenger ships or what???Tell me! Then he said ‘’don’t you tempt me ok???’’I apologised and gave him the answer. So guys I think whatever he asks you is about the type of ship you sailed on. So please don’t tempt him, you don’t want to make him angrier than he usually is!!

During the operation what checks will you make on deck?

How do you know your ship is dragging anchor? What actions will you take? What flag will you display?

Fire onboard. What checks will you make on BA set?

How does MARPOL annex 1 affect you as an officer? What are the discharge criteria from machinery spaces? What is the function of an OWS?

ROR

He started with rules. First he reminded me again that only the first answer would be considered and that there is no room for error in the rules part.

What rule mentions the limitations of radar? What does it say?

LIGHT RECOGNITION: Tell the type of ship, nav status, day shape and fog signal.

NUC, VESSEL AGROUND, VESSEL IN PILOTAGE.On NUC he asked the meaning of each additional sound signal.

What is the arc of visibility of the white light of a towing vessel?

BUOYS: He gave me one by one and told me to identify each and choose where to pass. Vessel outbound, north towards me.

1- West Cardinal mark, 2-preffered channel to starboard region B.

OPEN SEA, CLEAR VISIBILITY SITUATIONS: Take actions.

I am PDV with a PDV on my port side; I am PDV with a RAM on my port side; and I am CBD with a RAM on my port side.

RESTRICTED VISIBILITY: Your AB hears the fog signal of another vessel forward of your beam.Actions? What rule tells about restricted visibility? What other rules apply in restricted visibility?

Then he placed a ship on the table and a plot clearly on the PORT BOW. He said this is O.Finish the plot for a vessel which you can alter your course to port.

He then held my NOE and the stamp on his hand and we chatted a little bit. Before stamping my NOE he asked: Can a ship fish in the separation zone?

I said yes.He then stamped my NOE and said that he was very pleased with my performance and wished me good luck.

My thanks to all the lecturers of COGC particularly Mr A.Gilani,Vinil Gupta
