He then said we are on a passage from Richards Bay to Singapore and he wanted heavy emphasis on my passage planning with regards to transitting the Malacca Straits. APEM? I basically explained all stages of APEM which surprised me as I thought I would only have to do one area of it. Where/how can you find/receive info about weather in your area? How do you programme Navtex? Where can you find reporting points for your area? Special considerations when transitting Malacca? ( I struggled a bit with this one but the main point I believe he was looking for was CBD lights may be neccessary) M/E Failure, actions? ( I had gantry cranes on board ) Thats all the theory I can remember, there was loads, but probably because I was blurting my answers out really fast!! ROR: Alot of situations in open sea/TSS...you must know these inside out. Rest Vis: What rules apply in Res Vis? ( Dont forget rules 4 - 10, as well as 19 ) Explain WOA Only three situations, the only tricky one was when he asked me actions then said I was on the other vessel, actions. Easy enough if you practice alot! Buoyage: Seven buoys laid out, navigate through them. I was told I was outbound, heading south. Lights: S/V viewed port side,,length not known, underway possibly making way PDV CBD prob over 50m underway and possibly making way. Single white light Tug and tow viewed from stern. Dont be scared to ask colours of the smarties because some of them are so faded it is hard to tell which colour they are. That was it, pass!!! For me the theory really seemed to drag but Im assuming this was because it was my weakest area. All ROR/Res Vis/Buoyage/Lights took at most 10 mins. Just take your time!! And definately take a glass of water in with you, you need it. Good luck! Thanks to Vinil, Munawar, Rod, Robin, Alan, Parky, Simon, Tommy and all other lecturers who helped me during my time in the college. | |
